Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father's death the family of Ford, they were taken care of by her grandmother, mom, and godparents. When she was a young girl she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to the word association. Ford's love for acting grew as a child. She was a part of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she was a poor choice for this school. Ford applied again for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and on the fourth time she applied she was eventually admitted. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. He went on to get regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993, but she made her television debut on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the name Catherine Tate. Through the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. The regular theatre work she performed led her to join The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate received recognition as a stand-up comedian, which has been added to her repertoire in 1996.
